Topic: Oregon State Board of Higher Education backs in-state tuition for some illegal residents
Summary: The State Board of Higher Education unanimously approved a resolution in support of legislation that would let youth illegally brought to Oregon attend state universities at resident tuition rates. The Legislature is considering Senate Bill 742, which would allow students without legal status who have been in Oregon at least three years, graduated from high school and been accepted by an Oregon public university to pay in-state tuition. Opponents said the proposal would reward students breaking the law at the expense of legal Americans. Oregon's major business groups and all seven university presidents support the bill. There is a more detailed article discussing this issue in http://www.oregonlive.com/education/index.ssf/2011/03/oregon_senate_hearing_draws_cr.html
Intended audience: Teachers, parents, educators
Key points: 1. Undocumented Oregon students now must pay out-of-state tuition, three times the resident rate, to attend Oregon colleges.
2. No one campus would serve more than 15 more students in the next four years
Relevance:It is interesting to read this article. As there is such Bill for illegal students, how about those legal student? I am a legal students in Oregon, US. I am also paying higher tuition than resident students. When can legal students like me receive such support from the government? So I am on against side. It is not fair to legal students. Or like the opponents in the article said, it is at the expense of legal Americans. Besides, there are no more than 15 students will be served on one campus. Thus, the effort is kind of helpless to most of the illegal students.
