Summary: The North Clackamas School District plans to close two elementary schools that beat the odds for low-income students and recently were rated "Outstanding" on state report cards. Attempting to rein in expenditures, school board members voted unanimously Thursday to close Clackamas and Campbell elementary schools and to move a popular magnet program from Sojourner to another building. The plan is expected to save about $1.38 million in the district, which serves the Milwaukie-Happy Valley area.
Intended audience: Teachers, educators, parents
Key points: 1. Teachers also lamented the loss of the schools.
2. Ironically, one factor some parents and teachers believe played a role in the schools' success – their relatively small size – also counted against them.
3. Large schools operate more efficiently, and closing small schools affects fewer students.
Relevance: It is really sad to see schools closing. But what can teachers really do? All we can do is to wish the economy become better.

1 comment:

  1. Closing schools which are failing is one thing, trimming the budget fat by cutting what appears to be meat is hard to watch. I would like to see the transcripts of the actual discussion and see how they came to their conclusions.
